뮤지션 또는 아티스트의 삶이란 아무나 갈 수 있는 길이 아닐 것이다. 그 고달픈 길을 가게 되는 것은 그만큼 재능만으로 되는 일도 아닐 것이며, 그와 함께 음악을 향한 열정이 있기에 가능한 일일 것이다. 게다가 그들의 대부분은 빛을 보지 못하고 아무도 알아주지 않는 무명 뮤지션으로 살아가고 생활고를 겪기까지 한다. 성공한 뮤지션들이라고 마냥 행복하기만 한 것은 아니고 몸도 마음도 고단한 인생이기 십상.
대중 음악의 소재는 사실 무궁무진한 것이어서 그저 사랑 노래만 맨날 부르고 있는 것은 아니고, 이런 뮤지션으로 살아간다는 것에 대한 감상을 노래한 곡들이 제법 있다. 그 중 필자가 얼른 생각하기에 ‘불후의 명곡’ 수준에 오른 세곡을 짧게 살펴보자.

이 곡은 제목만 들어봐도 빌리 조엘 자신의 자전적인 노래일 수 밖에 없는 노래다. 이 곡은 실제로 그가 무명 시절 바에서 피아노치며 노래하던 시절의 얘기들을 노래로 만들었던 것으로 알려져 있고, 이 노래가 바로 그를 스타덤에 올려 놓은 첫 히트곡이 되어 주었던 것. 가사 내용을 보면 선술집의 다양한 인간 군상을 묘사하고 있기 때문에 혹자는 ‘서민의 애환’을 노래했다 하기도 하지만… 제목이 ‘피아노 맨’인데… 싸구려 술집에서 바글대는 취객들을 놓고 연주하고는 있지만 그래도 난 피아노 맨이야, 난 아티스트야, 라고 스스로에게 다짐하는 노래가 아닐까. 이 곡 이후에 정말 피아노맨 싱어-송라이터로 엄청난 성공을 거둔 아티스트가 되었으니 그래도 해피 엔딩.
Dire Straits, ‘Sultans of swing’

밴드의 이름부터 ‘Dire Straits’. 직역하면 ‘엄청 쪼들림’. 참 궁한 상황이었나보다. 이 곡은 그들을 그 궁상 속에서 구출해준 출세작이 되었다. 기타리스트이자 리드 보컬인 마크 노플러가 남 런던의 어느 싸구려 술집에서 보았던 광경에 영감을 받아 만든 이곡은 어느 술집에서 연주하는 허접 재즈 밴드를 묘사하고 있는데, 아무도 귀기울여 들어주지 않는 처량한 신세지만 그래도 자기네들이 ‘Sultans of swing’ 이란다. ‘술탄’이 뭔지 나도 잘은 모른다만… 굳이 한국말로 번역하면 군주, 왕, 아니면 황제? 그냥 king 보다 뭔가 더 신비롭게 권위적인…?
어처구니없는 자뻑이랄까, 하지만, 아티스트에게 자뻑은 필수다. 그게 아니면 뭐로 버틴단 말인가.
노래는 참으로 독특하게도 레트로 감성을 자극하는 리듬에 실린 마크 노플러의 시간을 거슬러 올라가는 듯한 클린톤 핑거스타일 연주, 그리고 중얼중얼거리는 밥딜런 풍의 보컬이 묘하게도 아련하고 짠한 느낌인데, 첨 들을 땐 이게 뭐지 싶지만 놀랍게도 들어도 들어도 잘 질리질 않는 참 특이한 곡이다. 이젠 고전 명곡이라고 해야 할 듯.

마지막 곡. 이곡은 공연의 엔딩 곡으로 정말 최고의 곡이 아닐까 싶다.
뮤지션의 삶이란, 설사 그것이 성공적인 뮤지션이라 할지라도 고달프기 짝이 없는 것. 공연이 끝나면 짐싸서 버스에 실려 또 어느 도시엔가에 내려 연주하고, 호텔에서 좀 쉬다가 또 어디론가 떠나고, 그래서 결국엔 거기가 시카고인지 디트로이트인지, 다 거기서 거기로 보이는 지경에 이르게 되는 (We’ve got to drive all night and do a show in Chicago, Or Detroit, I don’t know, We do so many shows in a row, And these towns all look the same) 그런 떠돌이같은 고단한 삶… 내일 해가 뜨면 여러분들은 각자 집에서 일어나겠지만 우린 천리 밖 어딘가에서 공연할 예정이라오… (‘Cause when that morning sun comes beating down, You’re going to wake up in your town, But we’ll be scheduled to appear, A thousand miles away from here)
공연은 끝나서 무대는 휑하고 짐은 다 쌌고, 이제 또 어디론가 정처없이 떠나야만 하는, 헛헛하고 스산하고 쓸쓸한 이 순간. 난 누구고 여긴 어디? 난 왜 사나? 이 떠돌이같은 고단한 삶을?

뮤지션은 무대에서 노래하고 연주하기 위해 존재하는 것, 그것만이 나의 존재의 의미다! 뮤지션의 열정이 우리를 감동시킨다. 그래서 우리는 앵콜을 외치는 것일 게다. 딱 한곡만 더! 티켓 값 아까와서 본전 뽑겠다고 앵콜하는 거 절대 아니다!
